Lack of knowledge

Young adolescent girls often have little information about menstruation, leaving them afraid, unable to self-advocate, and potentially at-risk leading up to and after their first period.

Projet Jeune Leader's surveys in the Haute Matsiatra region revealed that:

  • 61% of urban middle school students* don't know where menstruation comes from, compared to 77% of 386 rural middle school students**

  • 32% of urban middle school students* don't know that you can become pregnant once you start menstruating, compared to 56% of rural middle school students**

* 2014 survey of 1267 boys and girls in 4ième and 3ième in Haute Matsiatra

** 2016 survey of 386 rural boys and girls in 4ième and 3ième in Haute Matsiatra

Menstrual health is an issue of empowerment and education, of health and sanitation, of policy, of gender, of financial accessibility, of human rights, of environmental sustainability…
It involves mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters, elders and children, teachers and doctors, and communities at large.
In other words, menstrual health education can and needs to be tackled from multiple angles – and it needs to involve YOU.
The tools and resources on this website are intended to be launching points for you to use with communities you work with, and to get inspired to integrate menstrual health issues into your programming.
