Lack of knowledge
Young adolescent girls often have little information about the science of menstruation, leaving them afraid, unable to self-advocate, and potentially at-risk for early pregnancy.
Projet Jeune Leader's surveys in the Haute Matsiatra region revealed that:
61% of urban middle school students* don't know where menstruation comes from, compared to 77% of 386 rural middle school students**
32% of urban middle school students* don't know that you can become pregnant once you start menstruating, compared to 56% of rural middle school students**
* Projet Jeune Leader 2014 survey of 1267 boys and girls in 8th and 9th grade in Haute Matsiatra
** Projet Jeune Leader 2016 survey of 386 rural boys and girls in 8th and 9th grade in Haute Matsiatra
Menstrual hygiene is multifaceted; it involves information-education, hygienic menstrual products, and good sanitation infrastructure. It involves women and girls, men and boys. It involves individuals and whole communities.
In other words, menstrual hygiene can and needs to be tackled from multiple angles – and EVERYONE can be a part of it.
The tools and resources on this website are intended to be launching points for you to use with communities you work with, and to get inspired to integrate menstrual hygiene education into your programming.
